I have heard of DEFINITIVE TECHNOLOGY and Keplish. I heard a lot of people saying to stay away from Bose. If anyone can help me please let me know!!!

For less than 00 you can get a pretty decent in a box surround, not 2.1, you can get a good 5.1, and even better a 7.1 surround sound. I recommend you to look at Onkyo at Amazon.com, they have nice selection there, Onkyo is very good( I own) and Amazon is a reliable site to shop with great customer service , gonna send you some links.

I have an old 2.1 stereo system hooked up to my tv. I am creating a home theater with a projection screen and all.

I want to upgrade to a 5.1 system. I see alot of theater in a box solutions but they don’t seem to offer the versatility of a dedicated receiver. I like the idea of an all in one system with an integrated dvd, but they don’t seem to have that many inputs for other devices.

I also worry about if the DVD drive wears out, I will have to replace the whole unit or go out and add another box. Plus what if I decide to upgrade to hd dvds down the road. I also have a htpc and a Wii.

So, is a dedicated receiver is the better choice in the long run. It seems that I would want to ensure that it has hdmi as this seems to be where everything is going within the next 4 years.

(I have a nice progressive scan dvd player that I am happy with now that also plays Divx which I have many of.)

i was seeing if anyone has a bose 3-2-1 gs series II or 3-2-1 gsx dvd home theater system and knows if it playes DVD+R/+RW and -R/RW type of discs and if these systems are worth it?

The bose systems will play dvd -r/+r but not RW discs. Only diff with the gs and gsx model is the gsx has a hard drive for ripping your cd’s too. I don’t own this system, but I worked at circuit city and sold them for 5 years. If you have a big open room, don’t bother. Also, the bose system is loud, but the seperation is not that good. KEF also makes a system that isn’t as loud, but sounds better with better seperation for the same money as the GS. Check it out at a circuit city or best buy, they should have both models. We sold more KEF’s than bose.

*Update* Polk LSi 15’s will be ordered today. I am going to wait on ordering a 2nd subwoofer for 5.2 at this point. *Update* 3.1 setup, Onkyo TX-NR807, LSi C center, Lsi 7 Bookshelf fronts. My home theater, the 73inch Mitsu is full 1080p, it’s my roommates, but the LED tv and the home audio is mine. I am going to get a Polk LSI C center channel and Onkyo 806 in about a month. Just building little by little.

You should be able to connect any system by running cables through the audio out on you TV.You might ant to look at a sound bar.They are reasonably priced and are a vast improvement over the internal speakers that no longer work.

WIth a 0 budget, you’re going to have a pretty crappy system no matter how you slice it… 0 isn’t really enough to get a decent subwoofer, let alone a whole system. Your much better bet is to go with a 2.1 system. With very, very few exceptions, music is recorded in stereo, so you wouldn’t be gaining any sonic depth from the 5.1 system anyway. Also, while you’re going to be left with terrible speakers on a budget like that, they’ll be slightly less terrible if you’re only getting two bookshelfs and a sub, rather than a surround sound set.

Probably your only choice for barely acceptable sound at that price is the Klipsch CS-500 2.1 set.
