Question by Durkle: Home theater receivers suggestions (Denon AVR887 vs. OnkyoTX-SR674)?
I’m building a budget home theatre, and need help finding a receiver with all the options I would like.

Right now I am torn between the Denon AVR887 and the OnkyoTX-SR674. Which one is better?

For other receiver suggestions, here are the specs I need:
•HDMI/S video capabilities
•analog to HDMI upconverting
•2 HDMI imputs
•3 RCA audio imputs/1 video
•1 component imput
•front channel A, B, A+B capability
•0 range (yeah right!)

I’m building a 5.1 system, so it doesn’t matter how many channels it has. Would like about 100W per channel.

Hope I’m not too unrealistic! (except for price)

Best answer:

Answer by maninthemirror327
Before you buy one of these units new, I suggest you look at what is available on e-bay. I also suggest that you look at Pioneer’s Elite line of HT receivers. There are many power levels available in the VSX series. Pioneer makes really fine receivers and have done so for decades. It’s what they do. I think the VSX82TX has what you’re looking for in the HDMI department but new is at a higher price point. I have an older model (VSX45TX) which doesn’t have the HDMI ports, but I don’t miss it.

Do you have speakers yet? Speakers are super important, especially if you plan to listen to music with your system too. I always emphasize speakers with people, because that’s the place where the “rubber hits the road.” Good processing and amplification are super important to getting the data from your disks, but if you don’t have good speakers it’s all for naught.

Question by kligon_06: My Denon 591A Home Theater System’s speakers are making a popping sound?
We bought our system in January and it has been working fine for us until now. It’s the Denon 591 receiver packaged with the boston acoustic speakers..we bought the Polk PSW10 sub for it as well. The last week or so, we keep getting a random popping noise coming through the speakers. It only happens about once every hour so it’s hard to pin point exactly what it is. It’s happened when we’ve played the Xbox 360, PS3, and watched Dish Network. Now, we do have all of these things hooked up to a surge protector if that helps at all. The speakers are set up with the Audyssey settings as well. I checked the wiring in the back of the receiver and speakers..everything looked fine so I’m a little confused at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
also we bought the subwoofer about a week before this started happening…the old one crapped out on us.

Best answer:

Answer by Andrew
Something could be causing interference. If you just got that sub I would completely disconnect and unplug it and maybe even move it away. Move any other electronics away from it as well. Also try checking all the speaker wires as some may have been pulled loose if you were moving stuff around. good luck!

Question by eagle6625: Denon DHT-487DV Home Theater Surround Sound System?
I am having an issue with the powered sub woofer of my Denon DHT-487DV Home Theater Surround Sound System. It makes popping noises several times a day. I took it to a local electronics shop and they soldered connections and fixed the power supply in the unit. It is better than it was but it still pops. I have the extra cable length looped and tied near the subwoofer. Might this cable be the cause of the pops I hear? It seems tight but it is just snuggly in the connector. There is nothing for me to tighten.

Any suggestions? It works fine except for the annoying popping.

Best answer:

Answer by TV TECH-man®
To ISOLATE THE PROBLEM….

Disconnect the subwoofer entirely but leave it on…if it pops without it connected, it’s in the subwoofer….(don’t forget to disable the AUTO ON FEATURE)

If it pops with it ONLY connected, it could be the amp or the SOURCE of sound….

To isolate it to the amp or the sound source, try other sources and see if it pops….if it does, it’s the amplifier, if not then it’s likely the source…..

So THEN you need to get it to act up and unplug the audio cables from the suspected source of audio pop…..If it quits immediately, then the source is bad…..

What do you think? Answer below!
