This is because your stereo amplifier can emulate surround sound. So the amp can produce a 5.1 surround sound feeling from background noises and ambient sounds. Why are you not utilizing HDMI for video and optical/coax digital cable for your surround sound?

Most cable boxes come with a box these days so you don't need to do this.

However, something I would recommend instead of a VCR, if you have a LCD/Plasma TV then it most likely has an Audio Out on it which will take any sound you would normally hear on your TV and send it to an amplifier or external sound source.

If you have an A/V receiver that supports Dolby Pro Logic 2x or DTS NEO:6, you can get 5.1, 6.1, or even 7.1 channel surround sound from 2 channel audio. Its not as good as Digital 5.1but it does work surprisingly well. My First receiver didn't have digital so I used to watch all my DVD's using Dolby Pro-Logic II. Try watching Silent Hill in stereo, Then go back and turn on PLII or NEO:6 decoding. It works, and it works well.
