I just bought a Harman Kardon AVR-354, after weeks and weeks of research. Bought a factory reconditioned one straight from HK’s online store on eBay. It’s a great little unit, and costs less than 0. I considered Yamaha, Pioneer, Onkyo, Denon, and NAD. Onkyo’s run too hot and have piss-poor video upscaling. High-end pioneers, in the “elite” series, are nice. Denon is a solid performer in their upper-mid-range product line. Yamaha also has issues with video upscaling.

There was no way I was going to pay 0 for a unit, but if that WERE my budget number, I probably would have seriously taken another look at NAD. Like, this one… http://cgi.ebay.com/NAD-T755-Home-Theater-Receiver-New-in-SEALED-Box_W0QQitemZ230387725381QQcmdZViewItemQQptZReceivers_Tuners?hash=item35a42db445

Also, give a hard look at Marantz units. They have some kick-azz product in your price range.

Oh – what the heck?.. for the money you’re willing to spend, here would be my choice!

Pioneer, Denon and Onkyo are some good brands for your price range. I just picked up the Pioneer VSX919 and it ROCKS!

Pioneer and Onkyo are the two receivers I highly recommend. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the review on receivers. They are the expert on this field and have reviewed many receivers over the years and recommend the Onkyo TX-SR607 as an entry level receiver with 7.1 for only $599. If you want more power go check out the Onkyo TX-SR807 at Fry’s Electronic for $999. I do own an older model the 805 which is used for my family room. Hope this will help you out.
